Rovigo Rugby showed a great attack, but what about the defense?

During the first minute of the second part of the match, it seemed that Reggio Rugby came back from the locker room with a new mood, bigger determination and a lot of will to get the red and blue team into trouble.

They did a dangerous action inside the 22-metre area of Rovigo with the possibility of scoring a try. If it had verified, Reggio would have scored the third try and there  would have been a distance in the score almost equal to a scored try plus a goal kick. One of the several mistakes to which Rodriguez got us used when he played at Battaglini, let Majstorovic, who was responsible for a masteful interception, score a try after a run of 70 meters. What would have happened if Reggio had scored a try? Would Rovigo have had the mental strength to react? Absolutely yes, and the final result, which is amply in favour of Rovigo, shows it. Indeed it is strange to analyze a win of similar proportions finding negative points. The fact that 3 tries were done by a team who was decisively inferior in terms of technical and athletic capabilities , lets the door open to all those doubts, which since the beginning of the season have accompanied the team of Joe McDonnell . Rovigo was capable in the possession of the ball, the team were able to do some excellent passes, but they are still unable to organise the game phases, in which the opponents move through the field having the ball. Moreover there is the same defense problem  in restarting the game from touche with a drive mostly won by the opponents. This is a problem, which can be fatal for a team who has ambitions to win the championship.

Now let’s come to the positive things emerged in the first match of the second round of Eccellenza. David Odiete, who played in a great way, was rewarded as the best player of the match, even if personally I would have given the man of the match to Andrea De Marchi. After a quite featureless year the number 8 from Rovigo seems finally to have found the brilliance, which seemed to be lost  after his experience in the celtic league. This attitude should interest also Guglielmo Zanini, who came back from Pro12 too, however he is still far from that player who made himself appreciated in the second part of the last red and blue season. Also some movements done by the backs were good and even if I continue to complain about the inconsistency of the two centres, both Joe Van Niekerk and Denis Majstorovic scored a try. The touche was good because all the tosses were won. The scrum was grim as always even though it had to suffer 3 penalty kicks, 2 of which were indirect. Now it starts another period without Eccellenza, which will restart on the 21st of Jenuary against Fiamme Oro Rugby and then there will be another pause. The same interrupted championship, which certainly doesn’t favour the development of the Italian Rugby movement.

The results of the two teams that play in Pro14 (Benetton Treviso and Zebre) and of the National team are a proof of this problem.
